7th-generation switch-router at 25.6 Tbps supporting 800G interfaces with MPLS, Segment Routing, EVPN-VXLAN, and wire-speed TunnelSec encryption.
The Arista 7280R4 is the next-generation 400G universal switch router, extending the 7280R3 platform to native 400G QSFP-DD interfaces while retaining full L2/L3 switching, MPLS, Segment Routing, EVPN-VXLAN, and IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption on every port. Six fixed 1RU and 2RU models deliver 12.8 to 25.6 Tbps, covering configurations from 32x QSFP-DD 400G + 2x SFP+ management up to 48x QSFP28 100G + 16x QSFP-DD 400G in 2RU, bridging environments that mix legacy 100G infrastructure with new 400G AI cluster fabric tiers.
Table capacity reaches 512K IPv4 host routes, 256K IPv4 LPM routes, 256K IPv6 LPM routes (≤64 prefix length), 128K MAC addresses, 128-way ECMP with 2K groups and 16K members, and 256K IPv4 multicast routes, making the 7280R4 suitable as a border leaf, a DCI (Data Centre Interconnect) gateway, or a routing reflector node. Dual hot-swappable power supplies with 93% Platinum efficiency AC or 92% DC operation alongside front-to-rear or rear-to-front airflow options address deployment in both standard IT and carrier-grade environments.
IEEE 802.1AE MACsec hardware encryption operates at line rate on every QSFP-DD 400G port, covering both AES-128 and AES-256-GCM cipher suites. This allows encrypting all inter-rack or inter-DC traffic without a dedicated encryption appliance and without impacting forwarding throughput, a critical requirement for financial, healthcare, and government data centre deployments.
Full MPLS forwarding plane, Segment Routing with Traffic Engineering extensions, and EVPN-VXLAN overlay support allow the 7280R4 to serve as a leaf in a cloud-native overlay fabric, as a WAN PE router in an MPLS service provider network, or as a DCI gateway bridging both domains from a single platform running the same EOS image.
Native 400G QSFP-DD interfaces provide the per-GPU-node bandwidth that AI training clusters operating at 400G require. Combined with 128-way ECMP and 256K multicast routes, the 7280R4 handles both the all-to-all collective communication patterns of distributed training and the large multicast group sizes of parameter-server workloads at full line rate.
Twenty-five point six terabits per second of forwarding capacity in the largest 7280R4 model fits a complete routing and switching platform into 2RU. This avoids the chassis slot and line-card cost model of modular routers for deployments that need high capacity but not the slot count or card flexibility of a chassis, reducing both capital cost and operational complexity per forwarding domain.
