The Arista O-405 is a Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) outdoor access point designed for campus exteriors, venue plazas, transit hubs, and other outdoor environments where the deployment calls for Wi-Fi 7 6GHz coverage alongside a practical 802.3at PoE+ power budget rather than the higher-wattage 802.3bt PoE++ required by the O-435. At 25W maximum power draw, the O-405 operates from any standard 802.3at PoE+ switch port, making it deployable from existing campus switching infrastructure without per-port PoE budget upgrades. Three concurrent 2×2:2 access radios on 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz deliver a combined peak physical rate of 5.76 Gbps, with the 6GHz radio providing the low-interference outdoor channel that separates Wi-Fi 7 outdoor APs from the 5GHz-limited products they replace.

The uplink interface includes both a 5 GbE PoE+ RJ-45 port and a 10 GbE SFP+ fibre port, a combination that covers both copper campus distribution runs and fibre-fed pole or cabinet installations where a fibre home-run is the primary uplink medium. In mixed copper/fibre campus infrastructures this dual-interface design eliminates the need for separate AP SKUs for fibre-connected versus copper-connected mounting positions, reducing spare parts inventory. MTBF is rated at 1.4 million hours, which represents the O-405's core differentiator from the indoor C-400 model with the same radio specification: the 1.4M-hour MTBF reflects the environmental hardening of the chassis, connectors, and component selection required to sustain reliability across a -30°C to +65°C outdoor operating range. Memory is 2 GB RAM, 16 MB NOR flash, and 8 GB eMMC, hosting the full CloudVision CV-CUE stack locally with Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) for outdoor 6GHz standard-power operation.

25W on 802.3at PoE+ — No PoE++ Required

At 25W, the O-405 operates from 802.3at PoE+ switch ports that deliver at least 25.5W at the PSE output, covering all standard PoE+ outdoor distribution switches without requiring 802.3bt PoE++ upgrades. For campus outdoor deployments built on existing PoE+ switching infrastructure, this power budget means Wi-Fi 7 6GHz coverage can be added to exterior mounting positions without a switch refresh cycle. The trade-off relative to the O-435 (33W, PoE++) is that the O-405 does not include a downstream PSE port for powering co-located devices; the single uplink interface carries only the upstream data connection, with no provision for a PoE-powered camera or sensor at the same mounting point.

5GbE PoE+ and SFP+ 10G Dual Uplinks

The O-405 provides both a 5 GbE PoE+ RJ-45 uplink for copper Cat6A connections and a 10 GbE SFP+ uplink for fibre connections, allowing the same AP to serve copper-connected and fibre-connected mounting positions within the same deployment. Outdoor fibre uplinks avoid the 100-metre distance limitation of Cat6A, enabling AP installations at courtyard poles, sports lighting towers, and perimeter fence lines that are further than 100 metres from the nearest MDF or IDF. The SFP+ port supports standard SFP+ transceivers including single-mode and multimode modules, making it compatible with whatever fibre plant the site has installed without requiring a specific transceiver model.

1.4 Million Hour MTBF

A rated MTBF of 1,400,000 hours at 25°C ambient represents the reliability target for which the O-405's chassis, connectors, capacitors, and thermal management are engineered. For a network planner sizing an outdoor AP fleet, this figure translates to an expected annual failure rate of under 0.006% per AP, meaning a deployment of 100 O-405 APs would statistically expect fewer than one hardware failure per year under normal outdoor operating conditions at 25°C ambient. The actual operating temperature range of -30°C to +65°C reflects that this reliability target is maintained across the outdoor climate extremes of most Australian, UK, and European campus environments without heated enclosures or supplemental cooling.

Wi-Fi 7 6GHz with AFC Outdoors

The 6GHz radio on the O-405 supports Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC), the regulatory mechanism required for outdoor standard-power 6GHz operation in most jurisdictions. AFC queries an online database of authorised transmitter parameters based on the AP's GPS-reported location and returns permissible channel, bandwidth, and maximum transmit power values for that specific location, ensuring outdoor 6GHz operation complies with jurisdiction-specific rules without manual configuration. For organisations extending Wi-Fi 7 6GHz indoors to outdoor areas, the O-405 maintains the same 6GHz client experience outside as the indoor C-400 or C-430 provide inside, enabling consistent 802.11be multi-link operation across the full campus as clients roam between interior and exterior coverage cells.
