Network Visibility Savings

Network Visibility Savings

Replacing dedicated, proprietary network packet brokers with the same Ethernet switches already forwarding traffic. DANZ delivers comparable visibility at a fraction of the cost.

Traditional Network Packet Brokers (NPBs) are dedicated appliances purpose-built to aggregate TAP (Test Access Point) feeds from multiple network segments and distribute the combined traffic to security and monitoring tools: intrusion detection systems, network performance monitors, packet capture appliances, and forensics tools. The dedicated-appliance approach to TAP aggregation has a cost structure that reflects the purpose-built hardware: NPB appliances are priced as monitoring infrastructure rather than as general-purpose switching infrastructure, and they require their own operational management, maintenance contracts, and upgrade cycles separate from the production network. As network speeds move from 10G to 25G, 40G, 50G, and 100G, each speed generation may require a separate NPB appliance purchase since legacy NPBs are often not upgradeable to higher line rates.

Arista DANZ (Data Analyzer) provides TAP aggregation and packet distribution capabilities using EOS-based switching hardware, the same platform family used for production data centre and campus switching. The 7500R3 modular chassis aggregates dozens of 100G TAP feeds in a single chassis with non-blocking, line-rate packet processing, eliminating the need for separate NPB appliances for high-density 100G TAP aggregation scenarios. The 7280R3A delivers compact 100G TAP aggregation in 1RU for deployments where chassis-scale aggregation is not required, a smaller monitoring point or a single segment capture scenario. For TAP aggregation at 10G and 25G, the 7280R3 and 7060X/7260X platforms provide the port density required for server-tier TAP aggregation. Because DANZ runs on EOS platforms that also carry production traffic, organisations can share hardware across production networking and monitoring roles in environments where a dedicated monitoring overlay is not required.

Lower Cost Than Dedicated NPBs

Arista DANZ TAP aggregation runs on EOS-based switching platforms that are priced as general-purpose network switching infrastructure, not as purpose-built monitoring appliances with the premium cost structure of NPB hardware. Because DANZ platforms can serve dual roles (production switching and TAP aggregation) in environments where those functions can be co-located, the capital investment for a DANZ visibility architecture may be lower than a dedicated NPB deployment that requires separate hardware for each function. The operational management advantage of running DANZ on the same EOS platform as production switching also reduces the operational overhead: a single management tool, a single training investment, and a single OS release track cover both the production network and the monitoring infrastructure.

7500R3 for High-Density 100G Aggregation

The 7500R3 modular chassis provides the port density and non-blocking throughput required to aggregate dozens of 100G TAP feeds in a single chassis, eliminating the need for multiple NPB appliances and inter-appliance connections for large-scale 100G TAP aggregation scenarios. Non-blocking packet aggregation means that traffic arriving simultaneously on multiple 100G TAP ports can be forwarded to monitoring tool ports without drops, even when the aggregate input exceeds a single output port's capacity (in which case DANZ applies configurable load-balancing or filtering policies to manage the distribution). For security operations centres that aggregate traffic from multiple data centre segments, WAN links, and perimeter taps simultaneously, the 7500R3 chassis reduces the number of aggregation devices and the complexity of the inter-device patching compared to a distributed NPB topology.

7280R3A for Compact 1RU Aggregation

The 7280R3A modular series provides 100G TAP aggregation in a 1RU form factor, bringing the same DANZ software capability to smaller monitoring deployments that do not require chassis-scale port density. A single-segment capture scenario (monitoring the traffic from one data centre row, one WAN link, or one security zone) requires a single aggregation device with a manageable number of TAP inputs and tool outputs rather than a full chassis. The 7280R3A's compact form factor allows TAP aggregation to be co-located with the switching infrastructure being monitored in a standard rack without requiring a separate monitoring rack or additional rack space. As monitoring requirements grow, the 7280R3A aggregation can be linked to a 7500R3 chassis to extend the same DANZ fabric to a higher-capacity aggregation tier without replacing the 7280R3A devices already deployed.

Continuous Capture for Security and Compliance

DANZ supports continuous packet capture at line rate: recording all traffic from monitored segments to a packet capture appliance or storage system without sampling, without drops, and without gaps in the capture window. Continuous capture without sampling is the capability that security incident response requires: when investigating a breach, the team needs the complete packet sequence for the traffic flows involved in the incident, not a sampled subset that may have missed the specific packets that carried the attacker's payload or exfiltrated data. For compliance frameworks that mandate network traffic retention (financial services regulations requiring transaction-level network records, or healthcare regulations requiring audit trails for access to protected systems), continuous capture on the DANZ fabric provides the capture infrastructure with the retention completeness required to satisfy the compliance requirement.
