Arista EOS (Extensible Operating System) is the single operating system across the full Arista switching and routing portfolio, and the EOS licensing structure defines which software capabilities are available on each hardware platform. Perpetual licenses cover the core EOS feature set (Enhanced L3 routing, Virtualization, FlexRoute, and the traditional EOS platform features) and are structured into groups that align with the hardware tier of the platform being licensed. For fixed-configuration switches, licensing groups run from Group 0/1 (covering 1G and multi-gig access switches such as the 7010X series) through Group 5 (covering 400G and 800G spine platforms such as the 7060X4, 7060X5, and 7060X6). This tier structure means the software license cost scales with the hardware tier rather than being a flat per-device fee that applies equally to a 1G access switch and an 800G spine.
Modular chassis licensing uses a separate slot-based scheme that reflects the capacity and complexity of chassis-based platforms. Mod-1 (4-slot) covers smaller routing and aggregation chassis, Mod-2 (8-slot) covers mid-tier DC spine and routing chassis, Mod-3 and Mod-4 cover the 12-slot and 16-slot configurations found in the 7800R3 and 7800R4 AI spine platforms, and Mod-G covers modular PoE chassis used in campus access-aggregation roles. The slot-based scheme allows the license cost to reflect the actual chassis scale rather than the number of line cards installed, which would create a perverse incentive to under-populate chassis to reduce ongoing license cost. EOS perpetual licenses are a one-time purchase for the core software capability; the CloudVision management and automation layer is available as a separate monthly subscription (CloudVision-as-a-Service) and is not included in the EOS perpetual license.
The Group 0-5 fixed switch license tiers align directly with the switching capacity and feature requirements of each hardware generation: Group 0/1 for 1G and multi-gig access platforms, Group 2 for 10/25G top-of-rack access, Group 3 for 100G fixed leaf and spine, and Groups 4/5 for 400G and 800G spine platforms. This tier structure avoids the flat per-device pricing model where a 1G access switch carries the same license cost as a 400G spine, which would make the license cost a disproportionate share of the total cost for access-layer deployments. The tier structure means an organisation expanding from a 100G leaf-spine fabric to a 400G spine upgrade pays the Group 5 license only for the new spine hardware, not for re-licensing the existing leaf switches that remain at Group 3.
Modular chassis licenses are based on the chassis slot count rather than the line card population, providing a predictable licensing cost at the time of chassis procurement that does not change as line cards are added to empty slots over the life of the chassis. For a 7800R4 AI spine chassis deployed initially at half capacity with line cards in 8 of 16 slots, the Mod-4 license covers the full 16-slot chassis from the first day; there is no per-card license that requires additional purchases each time a slot is populated. The Mod-G modular campus license covers the campus access-aggregation tier separately from the data centre modular chassis licenses, recognising that campus PoE chassis have different feature requirements (802.3bt PoE management, campus VLAN segmentation, spanning tree optimisation) than data centre spine chassis.
The perpetual EOS license includes Enhanced L3 routing capabilities, Virtualization features for multi-tenant network segmentation, and FlexRoute for scalable BGP route table management, the features that most enterprise and cloud network deployments require to run a fully functional Layer 3 fabric. FlexRoute specifically addresses the memory constraints of merchant-silicon TCAM in large BGP deployments: rather than requiring hardware that can hold a full Internet BGP table in TCAM, FlexRoute allows EOS to selectively install routes from a large BGP table into hardware forwarding tables based on traffic demand, enabling 7000-series switches with standard TCAM to participate in BGP environments where the full route table would otherwise require dedicated route-reflector hardware. These capabilities are included in the perpetual license rather than requiring separate feature licenses.
EOS core capabilities are licensed perpetually: the license is purchased once and does not expire or require renewal, unlike subscription software where the feature set becomes unavailable if the subscription lapses. This perpetual model provides budget predictability over the hardware lifecycle: the software cost is known at procurement time and does not compound annually. The subscription layer, CloudVision-as-a-Service for network-wide automation, telemetry, and AI-driven management, is sold separately as a monthly subscription, allowing organisations to adopt the management platform at whatever pace fits their operational readiness rather than requiring both the hardware and management platform to be licensed simultaneously. Organisations that have not yet adopted CVaaS continue operating EOS under the perpetual license without any capability degradation to the core switching and routing functions.
