The 720DT and 720DF non-PoE models provide data-only access switching for environments where endpoint power is not a requirement, with the 720DF-48Y offering 48 ports of 1G SFP fibre access combined with 4× 25G uplinks for fibre-to-the-desk or distribution aggregation scenarios.
All 720D models are built around dual 1+1 redundant AC power supplies and N+1 hot-swap fans, ensuring that a single component failure does not disrupt access switching in floors or wings of a building where a redundant switch is not cost-justified at the access tier. Four 10G SFP uplinks (or four 25G SFP uplinks on the 720DF-48Y) connect to the distribution or aggregation layer over standard structured cabling or fibre. Arista EOS runs as a common software binary across the 720D, 720XP, and 750X families, meaning that a network administrator deploying 720D switches at access and 750X modular switches at campus core manages both tiers with the same CLI, API surface, and telemetry pipeline.

The 720DP-48S provides 30W at 1G for a floor of VoIP phones and Wi-Fi 6 APs drawing under 25W; the 720DP-48ZS steps up to 2.5G client-side speeds and 60W per port for 802.3bt APs requiring more power and clients capable of speeds above 1G. The 2.5G copper implementation supports 2.5GBASE-T over the same Cat5e or Cat6 cabling already installed in most enterprise buildings, eliminating cable-plant upgrades when increasing port speed from 1G.
The 720DF-48Y model exchanges copper downlinks for 48 ports of 1G SFP fibre access and upgrades its uplinks to 4× 25G SFP, making it appropriate as a fibre aggregation switch where building-runs to individual access locations exceed the 100 m limit of copper structured cabling. In large campus buildings with long horizontal cable paths to remote IDFs, the 720DF-48Y simplifies the distribution tier by eliminating intermediate media converters.
Every 720D model ships with dual AC power supplies operating in 1+1 Active/Active load sharing, so that a PSU failure produces no visible interruption to connected endpoints. Combined with N+1 hot-swap fan trays, the 720D sustains full forwarding capacity through individual component failures, a practical requirement for access switches that serve areas where a maintenance window cannot be scheduled during business hours.
