The Arista AWE 7200R Series covers the WAN edge and aggregation role in enterprise networks, providing fixed and modular routing platforms built for encrypted throughput scaling from 1 Gbps on the entry-level AWE-7220RP to 50 Gbps on the AWE-7250R. Each model supports 1/10/100 GbE interfaces with flexible network interface module (NIM) expansion slots on the mid-range and high-end variants, allowing the interface mix to be tailored to the specific WAN circuit types in use at each site, whether that is a combination of GbE copper, 10G SFP+, or 100G fibre aggregation. N+1 redundant power and cooling is available across the platform, meeting the availability requirements of WAN edge roles where the router is in the path of all site connectivity and must survive a power supply failure without disruption.

Traffic monitoring on the AWE 7200R uses IPFIX for per-flow data export, providing the flow records required for capacity planning, security forensics, and network performance analysis without deploying a separate probe appliance. FlowTracker extends this with device inventory and conversation-level monitoring, tracking which devices are communicating with which destinations and at what volume, information that is useful for detecting unexpected traffic patterns, identifying bandwidth hogs, and verifying that QoS policies are matching the intended application flows. The entry model (AWE-7220RP-5TH-2S-F) includes PoE++ on four RJ45 ports alongside the standard WAN interfaces, making it viable for branch sites where a single device needs to provide both WAN routing and local device powering without a separate PoE switch. Encrypted throughput figures are measured with iMix traffic, which approximates realistic enterprise traffic mixes rather than single-packet-size benchmarks.

Encrypted Throughput Scaling by Model

The three AWE 7200R models cover a range of encrypted throughput requirements: the AWE-7220RP delivers 1 Gbps encrypted (7 Gbps unencrypted) on a 4-core x86 with 16 GB RAM, the AWE-7230R scales to 5 Gbps encrypted and 30 Gbps aggregate with 2 NIM expansion slots for interface flexibility, and the AWE-7250R reaches 50 Gbps encrypted and 100 Gbps aggregate with 4 NIM slots for the highest-capacity WAN edge and regional aggregation deployments. The encrypted throughput figures are measured at iMix traffic distribution, which represents a realistic mix of packet sizes across a typical enterprise WAN workload rather than the single maximum-size packet scenario that produces artificially high benchmark numbers. This means the published throughput figure is a reliable guide to what the device will sustain under actual mixed traffic conditions.

Flexible NIM Expansion Slots

The AWE-7230R (2 NIM slots) and AWE-7250R (4 NIM slots) accept network interface modules that extend the fixed port configuration with additional interface types (1/10/100G SFP+ or RJ45 variants), allowing the interface mix to match the actual WAN circuit types at each deployment site. A site with a single 10G MPLS circuit requires different interfaces than a site aggregating multiple 1G broadband links alongside a 10G MPLS backup, and the NIM expansion model avoids paying for unused interface capacity in the fixed port configuration. The OCP3.0 NIM slot standard on the 7220RP-5TH-2S-F indicates the base platform uses the Open Compute Project form factor for expansion, which defines the physical and electrical interface between the router chassis and the module.

IPFIX and FlowTracker Monitoring

IPFIX (IP Flow Information Export) generates per-flow records (source/destination IP, port, protocol, byte count, packet count, and timestamps) for every flow that traverses the AWE 7200R, exporting those records to a flow collector where they can be analysed for capacity trending, security anomaly detection, and QoS verification. FlowTracker builds on the IPFIX base with device inventory tracking and conversation-level monitoring, maintaining a view of which IP endpoints are active on the network and which device pairs are generating the most traffic. For security operations teams that need to detect lateral movement, unexpected outbound flows, or unusual conversation pairs in network traffic, FlowTracker provides the host-level network visibility that packet captures provide selectively but IPFIX records provide continuously for all flows.

PoE++ on Entry Model with Dual USB

The AWE-7220RP-5TH-2S-F includes four RJ45 ports with PoE++ capability alongside its WAN interfaces: 4 RJ45 10/100/1G PoE++, 1 RJ45 10/100/1G standard, and 2 SFP+ 1/10G. For small branch office deployments where the WAN router is the primary network device at the site, PoE++ on the LAN-facing ports allows the router to power local devices, such as IP phones, access points, and cameras, without a separate PoE switch, reducing both cost and rack space. Two USB ports support auxiliary functions such as external storage or LTE modem connections, and a dedicated 100M/1G management port provides out-of-band access to the router management plane separate from the data interfaces, which is important for recovering a misconfigured device without requiring physical console access.
